Personal Trainer Profile – Kate Leal
Personal trainer/massage therapist/sports trainer

Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?

I am a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. I currently work with clients one on one, in partners or in boot camp style groups using a holistic training style which includes nutrition advice; postural correction; recovery assistance; and strength, power, speed and endurance conditioning. By providing education and motivation clients can develop and achieve their desires.

Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?

Firstly I completed my certificate III and IV in fitness with the FIA, and then began as a Personal Trainer at Fitness First and was able to determine and direct my niche market to “athletes”. I am training the ‘average Jo’ and still living my passion in sports training. I then decided to undertake my diploma in Remedial massage with FIA to assist my clients further with recovery and direct myself into the rehabilitation side of sport. My next step is getting involved with elite sporting teams and professionals.

Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?

My ongoing background in a variety of sports from an early age until now has meant that fitness is the only choice when it comes to a career. This and helping people towards their goals and the joys of achieving these with them is definitely a highlight.

Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?

Being a Personal trainer/massage therapist and having your own business means you need to be an energizer battery (NEVER SAY DIE). You always need to be doing your own research and study to keep one step ahead of everyone else. Make sure you have a point of difference to the rest and always be looking to learn more and attract new clients. Especially if you’re working for yourself it seems if you’re not training your clients or yourself, you’re doing business paperwork, planning sessions or studying to keep ahead. But it’s all worth it when you know you are making a difference by putting in the effort.

Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?

FIA Certi III & IV in Fitness
FIA Diploma of Remedial Massage
FIA Diploma of Sport

Q: How important do you think it is to update your learning in the fitness world?

The fitness industry is forever changing and is becoming a real need rather than a luxury in today’s society especially with the obesity epidemic and also the growth in sports popularity and technology. This demand has attracted many people to start a career in fitness, which means people currently in the industry need to work hard to stay fresh and effective. The importance of always keeping informed and utilising a variety of innovative training techniques is what makes a successful trainer who can withstand even the effects of the global financial crisis.

Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?

More functional exercises using biomechanics, rather than relying on technology or machines. Especially in sporting environments, I think the equipment should be less important than the participants and how they use their bodies to perform.

Q: Any predictions?

Trainers are quickly becoming more than just exercise gurus. Trainers will have more of a focus on the big picture especially mentally to really motivate their clients rather than just telling them what exercises they should be doing.

Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?

Learn everything you can because it’s what you know that makes a difference to your client’s results and therefore your business. Always be up for a challenge because no individual is the same.
