Renay Lee

Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?
I’m a personal trainer for 2 gyms, G fitness Drummoyne and YMCA’s Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. I’m a swimming teacher and teach boxing for fitness. I’ve also established my own group outdoor training business - No Butts Fitness.
Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?
Never being the one to play with Barbies as a girl, I chose to surf, wave ski, compete in track and field, play netball, tennis, and swim. You name it I wanted to do it. Not realizing straight away that I could make a career from my passions, I went into marketing and promotional co-coordinating for a beer company. Feeling unsatisfied from creating beer bellies, I decided to go the opposite direction and help people live a healthier life.
Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?
The 9-5 desk job life has never been my cup of tea. I’m very much a people’s person. I love the satisfaction from helping someone achieve the so called unachievable. And yes, I’m well aware how corny that sounds but honestly you cannot be in this industry unless that motivates you.
Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?
6am outdoor starts in winter... Brrrr brrr brrr!
Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?
I’ve completed Cert III and IV in Fitness and almost the Diploma of Fitness (fitness specialist) with of course, the No 1 Institute in Australia…FIA! ;-) I have also qualified for the Adv Cert qualified in Boxing and a Certificate in Swimming Teacher and Water Safety with Swim Australia. My plans next year are to enroll into a Bachelor of Exercise Science at ACU.
Q: How important do you think it is to update your learning in the fitness world?
Essential! Things are forever advancing in this industry. It would really concern me if there was no continuing education provided. You can’t afford to be behind the eight ball when you’re dealing with people’s health and well-being.
Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?
More work on obesity in children. It is SO important to teach them from a young age the serious health risks related to being overweight. There in lies the key to the future.
Q: Any predictions?
The standards for obesity will rise. Being overweight won’t be considered to be such an issue, which really alarms me. I understand beauty comes from within but if those extra kilos could potentially mean living or dying, a line needs to be drawn.
Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?
No 1 pre requisite must be you enjoy fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Do some research. Talk to people within the industry and find out exactly what’s involved before you jump in.
