Personal Trainer Profile - Michael Ettingshausen

Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?

I have owned and Operated a performing and martial arts centre in the Sutherland Shire for over 10 years. I run group exercise classes in boxing fitness and Martial arts based fitness classes to music. In 2005 I became a franchised Personal Trainer at Fitness First Sylvania, which gave me more scope to train people one on one.

Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?

When my wife and I opened our centre in 1995 I enrolled in a cert 3 course so that I could take group exercise classes at our centre. I have stayed a registered group fitness instructor over that time and recently completed my Cert IV in Fitness with FIA.

Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?

It has been a big part of my life for over 10 years, and in that time I have helped many people achieve their training goals. It is very rewarding seeing people of all ages succeed. I had always dreamed of being able to do this as a career and I am now living that dream.

Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?

No gripes, it’s an industry that is moving fast, so you do need to keep up with the latest training methods, and this can be challenging with running a business, raising a family and staying on top of everything else.

Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?

I have been actively training in karate for over 22 years, so most of my training has been based on it. It has been of great benefit for me to be involved in the fitness industry and to keep in touch with the latest fitness facts and science so that I can fill the gaps between traditional training methods and the latest information coming out of the fitness industry.

Q: How important do you think it  is to update your learning in the fitness world?

Its great now that the amount of courses you can attend are unlimited. You can pick and choose your area of speciality, or update yourself on topics you are not in tune with. The industry is always moving forward so you must keep up with the latest information if you wish to be successful.

Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?

Maybe a closer working relationship between doctors and PT’s.

Q: Any predictions?

Its not my own but I believe the children’s market has huge potential..

Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?

Do your homework, gather as much information as possible before you jump into it. Speak to people in the industry who are doing what you want to do, and then go and get qualified. If you want to be a success be willing to put in the work as it may not happen over night.
