Personal Trainer Profile – Martine Muhlethaler

Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?

I‘m a Fitness First Franchised Personal Trainer and I also run my own outdoor training sessions (one on one and in groups).

Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?

I am from Switzerland and at age 8 I started gymnastics in my local club and I loved it so much that I decided to become a gymnastic teacher at age 15. Later on, I hit another type of gym floor and it is then I discovered the world of big muscles and pretty girls wearing tight bike pants and hot pink leg warmers! I decided to give it a go and guess what? I became a gym junkie!

Then I was working for the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland where I was given the opportunity to travel the world through work and also allowing me to combine my 2 mains passions: sports and travelling. What an unforgettable experience!

Almost 5 years ago, my partner and I migrated to Australia and I really wanted to take another direction in my career. I enrolled into FIA, completed my Cert III and IV and became a Personal Trainer. I have never regretted my decision since!

Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?

Lots of them! But the main one is that I deeply believe that happiness is a mixture of choice and a good balance in life. I do my best to motivate and energise people through exercising and good nutrition. The outcome is consequently happiness and well being. No doubt that the best reward for me is when my clients thank me for having changed their life. It makes me really proud of my job!

Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?

Not yet. Come back to me in a few years!

Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?

Yes. Cert III and IV with FIA and I regularly follow seminars and courses to be updated on the fitness industry. It is a continuous learning curve and I can tell you that I am not finished yet!

Q: How important do you think it  is to update your learning in the fitness world?

VERY IMPORTANT as this industry is growing really really fast. In my opinion, a good personal trainer should always update their knowledge not only for themselves but also to offer the best service for their clients.

Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?

More information at schools about obesity. Children MUST learn at a young age how to eat a well balanced meal and why being healthy is so important. We live in a fast moving world where you need to be strong both physically and mentally.

Q: Any predictions?

Do you remember the old times with no mobiles, no internet, no emails and no Personal Trainer? Those times are over and I predict that in few years many people will question themselves on how they have been living for so long without a Personal Trainer... Too optimistic?  Maybe… but why not? Wait and see…

Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?

Read a lot about it, call FIA, enrol and enjoy your new career!
