Personal Trainer Profile - George Jacobs

Q: What area of fitness are you currently working in?

I run my own Step into Life franchise; it is based at Blakehurst Sydney. It is an outdoor group personal training business. And I love it. I also do a little bit of one on one personal training for a few select clients, who are more like friends.

Q: How did you get into the fitness industry?

A friend of mine convinced me that I would make a good trainer and would be will suited to this industry. I checked out a couple of course providers and liked FIA the most. Choosing to go with FIA has proven to be a very prudent move. I am forever grateful to the knowledge and training they have provided me. Paul Batman is an extraordinary teacher.

Initially I got into the fitness industry to earn some money to supplement my then career. I soon realised that the fitness industry was where my future lied. I have since left my old profession and now solely work in the fitness industry, much to my delight.

Q: Your reason for being in the fitness industry?

This is a fantastic industry. I am able to be an entrepreneur, whilst at the same time able to help people and make a great impact on their lives. We are now at a time in our existence where we, the human race, can actively control our health and well being, with great accuracy. I like giving people the ability to shape their lives.

In short this is a great industry. I am having so much fun. I enjoy the perfect work/life balance. This industry is full of excellent opportunities, and it is an ever-growing industry.

Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?

Some so called professionals are not so professional. They do tarnish all the hard work that everyone else does. I also dislike the fads and trends that constantly appear.

Q: Did you study any areas of exercise or fitness?

I have conducted all my formal training through FIA. So far I have achieved the qualifications of Cert III Gym Instructor, Cert IV Personal Trainer. I do intend to eventually get my Diploma, again through the FIA.

I have also completed numerous courses within the industry that are specific to the activity that I was/am doing at the time.

Q: How important do you think it  is to update your learning in the fitness world?

I believe it is very important. New research is always coming out, new training techniques and theories/ideas. You have to stay aware of these, therefore you can provide a better service to your clients.

Q: What would you like to see happen in the industry over the next few years?

I would like to see fitness professionals becoming more professional towards each other and work together, through networks, referring; joint projects etc, instead everyone competing against each other.

I would also like to see the governments get more involved in promoting our industry, educating about the benefits of health and fitness.

Q: Any predictions?

I believe the government will eventually begin to provide incentives for individuals to become fit and healthy. This will help counter the looming problems that will be facing our society in relation to obesity and other health/inactivity related issues. When this occurs, there will be massive growth in the industry. The incentives could come in many forms, some desirable such as rebates/allowances. Some not so desirable, as in taxes similar to that in place for those without private health insurance.

Q: What advice do you have for anyone wanting to learn more about fitness?

Study with FIA, they are the best.
