working in?
I work across many areas of the fitness industry.
Personal Training - I have a personal training business in Sydney CBD and train 10-15 people a week.
Management - I am a personal training manager for Fitness First Darlinghurst
Education Development and Training - I have a training and education business with Australian boxing legend Johnny Lewis, we specialize in training Personal trainers in the area of boxing, we teach trainers the secrets of the boxing world and how they can use these to train their clients and to stand out from the crowd in a competitive market place. I also do some part time lecturing and presenting for FIA and have presented for the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association.
Corporate Health have a few corporate health clients and provide their staff with health and fitness training and advice.
Sports Conditioning I am also a strength and conditioning coach to some of the Australia’s and worlds best boxers and a few professional and semi professional athlete’s.
Q: How did you get into the fitness
industry?
I grew up in Wagga Waaga and started in the Fitness industry in 1994. David Smith who owns Workout health club took me under his wing and I started working in his gym doing programs, classes, reception and anything else he would let me do, his wife Karen also tried (unsuccessfully) to teach me to be an aerobic instructor. Back then the only qualification I had was the old fitness leaders certificate.
Q: Your reason for being in the fitness
industry?
When I left school I started working in a gym part time, and just loved it. There was so much to learn and it was exciting (and still is) training others and helping them be their best. Now my focus is shifting to helping other personal trainers become better trainers. It is such a great industry with so many opportunities within our industry.
Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?
I think all trainers should be a member and support our governing body Fitness Australia/Fitness NSW. Fitness Australia are working hard to regulate and give our industry credibility and professionalism and need the support and membership of all fitness professionals.
Q: Did you study any areas of exercise
or fitness?
I firstly did a fitness leaders qualification which believe it or not was a 9 day course, then you were a qualified fitness leader. I wanted to learn more so went to Wollongong University, I did two degree’s a Bachelor Education in Physical and Health Education and a Biomedical/Exercise Science post graduate qualification. Whilst at University I also completed my Level 2 Strength and Conditioning qualification, SAQ, Level 2 Coaching Principles and also a Diploma of Remedial Massage.
Q: How important do you think it
is to update your learning in the fitness world?
If you want to get to the top in any industry the key is continuous learning and application. The ability to expand your knowledge base by doing courses, attending seminars, reading books and networking with other like minded professionals is the key to be in the top 10% of our industry. It is pretty simple if you want to earn more money have more clients and always have your services in demand is to increase your knowledge.
Q: What would you like to see happen
in the industry over the next few years?
I would like to see our industry and its members become recognized as professionals. I think this will happen by people continuing to study and update their skills and to support the governing body.
Q: Any predictions?
The fitness industry will go from strength to strength with many new opportunities opening up. With the expansion of many fitness chains coming into the Australian market, personal training studios, outdoor training groups and group training programs there will be more and more opportunities for fitness professionals.
Q: What advice do you have for anyone
wanting to learn more about fitness?
If your passionate about the fitness industry and want to be successful the key is to have a solid foundation of Academic/Theoretical base and develop the practical skills of training and coaching. If you want to be success in the fitness industry you need to have a balance of practical and theory skills one without the other will hold you back in being a great fitness professional.
