Q: What area of fitness are you currently
working in?
Personal Training - Franchising studios
Q: How did you get into the fitness
industry?
I studied for a Sports Science Degree at UNSW (my main lecturers
there now lecture for the FIA). I needed money to survive
so I approached Peter Cosgrove at Sylvania Physical in 1991.
He gave me the opportunity to teach circuit classes - it was
a great learning experience.
Q: Your reason for being in the fitness
industry?
I absolutely love seeing people transform their bodies and
in turn their attitude to life. I also love providing trainers
with long-term career opportunities.
Q: Any gripes about the fitness industry?
The long hours used to get to me, but now that I have structured
my business better, it is no longer a problem.
Q: Did you study any areas of exercise
or fitness?
Yes Sports Science Degree. I attend as many fitness conventions
as possible. I went to IRSHA in the States this year for the
first time – It was great.
Q: How important do you think it
is to update your learning in the fitness world?
With so much competition these days it is vital. I believe
if you do not stay up to date, you will probably fail.
Q: What would you like to see happen
in the industry over the next few years?
I would like to think that all trainers are appropriately
qualified at least Certificate IV in Fitness and hopefully
moving onto the Diploma of Fitness. I also hope that people
become more knowledgeable about certain aspects of fitness
i.e. Nutrition. I believe that it is the missing link.
Q: Any predictions?
More and more people will seek the services of personal trainers
in small Personal Training studios/settings, rather than overcrowded
gyms.
Q: What advice do you have for anyone
wanting to learn more about fitness?
Attend as many fitness courses, continuing education programs
and conventions as possible. Apart from a good knowledge base
get as much practical experience as possible. Anyone wanting
to run their own fitness business should also read business
management books and attend business courses, the FIA Certificate
IV in Fitness business subject would be a good start.
