What are FIA Electives?
FIA Electives are short, interesting practical courses that FIA students complete to either gain additional qualifications in their relevant industry and/or further knowledge and skills on a particular topic. Most electives also attract CECs for re-registration purposes.
HOW AM I ASSESSED?
Students will complete a variety of flexible assessments both formal and informal for any of the electives listed:
For example:
• Tutorials online (a variety of tutorial assessments at student online)
• Formal (multiple choice) Exams completed at student online
• Completion of a practical assessment, either during the elective or at an arranged assessment day after the course. Some practical assessments can be completed via video/DVD.
GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR - (Choose one of the following options – either option leads to registration in this category)
Group Exercise Instructors lead classes, assisting others to achieve their desired workout. You may work for one fitness centre or teach for a variety of centres. With ongoing education you can develop the ability to teach a wide range of classes in a variety of settings from the traditional freestyle aerobics class to a boot camp on a beach.
OPTION 1 - GROUP EXERCISE (AEROBICS) INSTRUCTOR
For any Instructor who wants to teach freestyle exercise to music classes.
This course offers the most current and comprehensive coverage of basic and advanced instructional techniques for teaching exercise to music classes. Designed for aspiring instructors, you will enhance your communication and choreography skills to give you increased teaching confidence (especially in front of large groups). It provides simple and effective ways to decrease class complexity and impact while increasing intensity.
You will learn to:
• increase your teaching confidence (especially in front of large groups)
• incorporate safe and effective movements into different types of classes
• understand proper music selection, choreographic techniques, correct cueing
• teaching methodologies, strategies to help you identify and modify incorrect movements and techniques for monitoring class exercise intensity
How is the group exercise (aerobics) instructor course offered?
Campus based - Weekend course (all day Saturday and Sunday). Consists of lectures and practical presentations, all materials are supplied.
OPTION 2 - GROUP EXERCISE (FITNESS) INSTRUCTOR
For any Instructor who wants to lead a group exercise class in a wide variety of activities/formats other than aerobics.
This course offers the most current and comprehensive coverage of basic and advanced instructional techniques for leading groups in a variety of popular formats. Designed for aspiring instructors, you will enhance your communication and leadership skills to give you increased teaching confidence. This course will introduce you to the diverse array of Group Fitness classes currently on the market and provides simple and effective ways to lead groups in a systematic and safe manner.
You will learn to:
• incorporate safe and effective movements into different types of classes
• understand a variety of group training formats i.e. Boxing, Spin, Outdoor/Indoor circuits, Body Conditioning, Group Resistance Training etc.
• teaching methodologies, strategies to help you identify and modify incorrect movements and techniques for monitoring class exercise intensity and safety
How is the group exercise (fitness) instructor course offered?
Campus based - Weekend course (all day Saturday and Sunday). Consists of lectures and practical presentations, all materials are supplied.
AQUA FITNESS INSTRUCTOR (WATER BASED CLASSES)
The Aqua Fitness Instructor will lead classes, assisting others to achieve their desired workout in the water environment. You may work for a variety of centres i.e. Leisure centres, schools, private pools, and hotels. This course is perfect to enhance the diversity of skills for those already working in the aqua environment. With ongoing education you will develop the ability to teach a wide range of classes/groups in a variety of settings from the traditional aqua class to deep water training for athletes.
The FIA Aqua Fitness Instructor Course is the most comprehensive course of its kind in Australia. A challenging blend of theory and practical information, the Aqua Fitness Instructor Course presents the hydrostatic elements of water that make strength training, aerobic conditioning and movement principles in water so unique.
How is the aqua fitness instructor course offered?
Campus based - Weekend course (all day Saturday and Sunday). Consists of lectures and practical presentations, plus assigned practical and theoretical work completed in your own time, all materials are supplied.
SENIOR FIRST AID AND FIRST AID RE-CERTIFICATION
To gain registration and insurance as a qualified fitness instructor you need a Work Cover approved Senior First Aid Certificate. Our First Aid Course is unique as you complete this course by attending a one-day “face to face”and the rest via distance online learning.
Re Certification: Need to recertify, simply enrol (attach a copy of your current First Aid Certificate) and attend the 1-day Practical as per students completing the full first aid course.
SPORTS TRAINER*
This subject introduces the student to the role of the Sports Trainer in a sporting environment. It focuses on the identification of specific injuries, preventing injuries through adequate preparation of warm up, cool down and taping techniques.
How is the Sports Trainer course offered?
Campus based – weekend course (all day Saturday and Sunday). Consists of lectures and practical presentations, all materials are supplied.

Please Note:
The above electives will give you the competencies and statement of attainments that allows you to register in the relevant instructor categories with Fitness Australia and may also make you eligible to attend continuing education workshops that may offer additional “instructor information” for group exercise. As these are external workshops (held mostly by non RTOs) the FIA cannot guarantee the quality or the validity of any/all of these workshops. Students need to independently research these.
